Green Papaya Pan Asian Cusine
13141 City Station
Jacksonville, FL
Asian tops my list as a must have food group and I have eaten it in many restaurants in and round Jacksonville, yet I never heard of this spot until one of the members in my Meetup group mentioned it. Actually she was tired of always having to drive a long distance to attend our meetings. So we agreed to set up a dinner here and drive to her part of the world. Located by the airport in the River City Market Place it was a delightful find. From the outside it looked small, but upon entering the area is spacious, modern and very comfortable well lit and cozy. Our party of nine fit comfortably into the spot reserved for us. The interior has modern design and is nicely accessorized.
Although the focus is on Thai cuisine, there are a variety of other exotic dishes from other regions of Asia. We kicked off with the Green Papaya Sampler at 12.00 this was a combination of two thai egg rolls, two coconut shrimp, two crab rangoons, two chicken satay, one fresh spring roll, served with sweet and sour sauce along with peanut sauce. It was nicely assembled on the plate and every one had a taste
Along with the platter we tested the Authentic Wonton soup filled with homemade with chicken, shrimp and bok choy in iragrant chicken broth with herbs and the Tom Kha Gai that contained fresh mushrooms, peppers, onion, basil, coconut milk in thai chili broth with chicken, nicely spiced to a level three as requested.
Next up our entries; Thai Chili Tamarind Seafood an interesting combo of fresh peppers, onions, broccoli, carrots, and basil stir fried with tiger shrimp, scallops, calamari, mussels with chef’s special seafood sauce at 20.00 was a more than ample portion served with white or brown rice. The fish and shell-fish was cooked perfectly the mussels being plump and the shrimp tender and not chewy. Green Curry contained broccoli, snow peas, onions, mushrooms, bell peppers and coconut milk with Thai green curry. The diner has a choice of protein and the price varies accordingly. Fresh Spring rolls at 6.00 for 2 large soft rice paper rolls wrapped with cilantro mint, steamed shrimp, rice noodles, sauteed chicken served with a special peanut sauce. A standard favorite Beef with Oyster sauce. Fresh broccoli, mushrooms, peppers, onions, carrots, stir fried with beef in the oyster sauce was plentiful and served with white or brown rice at 14.00. The Drunken noodles flavored with large rice noodle stir fried bell peppers, onions, basil, bean sprouts and scallions, you also have your choice of protein for this dish and it is priced accordingly.
We finished all of this off and then moved to desert. For me Mango Sticky Rice at 6.00. This dish was so beautifully presented I did not want to eat it. We also chose the Xango fried bananas with cream cheese and choice of green tea, coconut or mango ice cream coming in at 7.00 it’s a bargain and well large enough to share. Sadly they were out of the Mochi Ice Cream, the traditional green tea with strawberry or red bean.
Everything being devoured the group voted this a 5 star experience and a great value for the price. This is easily a destination spot for lunch or dinner and well worth a try.
