For no reason at all I stopped here today for lunch. Way past breakfast and well into the lunch part of the day I was hungry. So going in here would satisfy my curious and hungry self. I have passed Johnny’s many times on my way into the Riverside/Avondale area and it always seems busy, plus there are many office buildings and I have seen the workers making their way across Riverside Ave to grab a bite here.
Signs at entrance list some of the days specials.
This spot is about as basic as it gets, four booths several tables, walk up counter and fountain drink machine. What I found not basic, is Johnny as he greets each customer like they are the most important person ever. This being my first time in his greeting was so warm and genuine I had to think have I been here before and he remembered me? But as I watched each customer enter he welcomes everyone. It became quite evident who the regulars were, because of the light-hearted banter that was in going on. I was happy I stopped in, now if the food makes me as happy my day is complete.
I settled on the Ruben with Slaw, not a fan of Sauerkraut slaw makes the perfect substitute for me. I wanted fries, and was told there was a small up charge, but that mattered not. I got my drink from the counter and took as seat, watching the action while I waited.
Line up place your order then step over to pay. They will bring the food to your table.
Sandwich was delivered, before even tasting it I knew by experience this was going to be something wonderful. First off it was a triple decker, warm toasted bread, not toasted to a crisp, but a soft brown that warms the bread and allows it to remain soft, full of meat, moist slaw, and Swiss cheese with an ample amount of Russian dressing.
Meaty and full of goodness
Meat a perfect representation of real Corned Beef, the slaw made in house daily, was sweet and flavorful. I can’t recall having a better slaw in a spell. Fries, the standard crinkle cuts but not bad. I am not a big fan of the hand cut fries, so these were just fine with me. This sandwich at $7.25 is a bargan. I was not able to finish the entire meal, but as I do, I plucked all the goodies out of the bread and finished off the meat, cheese and slaw.
My verdict on Johnny’s Deli and Grille, worthy of a stop, there are many choices on the menu, Pitas, Subs, Lunch and Breakfast Plates. The friendliness of Johnny and his staff is exceptional, prices reasonable, I would return for those reasons. Not good for large groups, but 3 to 5 could order enough different dishes, that everyone could taste something new.
