Sushiko Japanese Restaurant

3620 St Johns Ave
Jacksonville, FL 32205

My friend and I decided to forgo the normal brunch fare, eggs and mimosas and go for Sushi and Saki.  Sushiko is highly regarded by many of my food friends, so off we sailed. Small spot just out side he hub of Avondale dining strip, but still close enough to make parking a challenge, especially on a Sunday.  We persevered  and were rewarded, not only with a parking spot but a great brunch meal.

Inside long and narrow, nicely decorated in a calming Japanese style, Cherry blossoms, dark wood, traditional music,  Tables and booths, make it good for groups or couples.

There was a specials board, outside that caught our eye, Fried Fresh Oysters with a Spicy Chili dipping sauce.  After we looked over the menu we decided to start with this option to share.

These were tasty, with a nice crunch.  The oysters were cooked just to the point of being firm, warm and briny.  The dipping sauce, added a another level to the all around flavor. We loved it!

Also adding to the joy a nice bottle of chilled unfiltered Saki, if you have never ventured into this drink, I highly recommend you do.  For years I drank the hot Saki from the small cup,  once I discovered the chilled unfiltered, I never looked back.  Ask you server for a nice medium priced bottle.

For our main dish we decided on the Tuna Lover, a combination of sushi, sashimi and a spicy tuna roll, this included  a salad with ginger dressing, and a Miso soup.  Soup  plentiful with mushrooms and crunchy bits, the broth meaty, nutty tones prevailed.

The salad basic chopped iceberg, with  Shrimp Sauce, it came with the meal so  who’s to complain.

Since we were sharing we also had a dish of  Yaki Udon delicious stir fried noodles.  We both love everything noodles, this dish was delightful.  Crunchy vegetables, noodles, nicely tossed.

The big rewards the Tuna Lover, 3 large pieces of sushi, 3 large pieces of sashimi and a tuna roll.  I can’t recall when I have seen beautiful  Ahi  grade tuna  so generously sliced.

Nicely presented, fish fresh and cold, rice sweet and sticky, the tuna roll spicy with a nice texture.  Nothing not to like.

We finsihed up with the Green Tea ice cream, with out the chocolate sauce.  Two very large scoops and two spoons.  This is a perfect ending to the meal, sweet with out being heavy.

This spot is highly recommended, the menu is ambitious, plating is artful and appealing, the fish amazingly fresh, service stellar.  Go for it, I believe you will be pleased.
