We found ourselves back in the Riverside area on Monday so it seemed a good time to give Timoti’s a test. The newest fast food spot on Park Ave has gotten mixed reviews so why not add our two cents right?
I was most impressed with the interior, not quite the beach shack I was familiar with from my growing up days on the New England coast, more like trendy, hip shack. Rough hewn floors, brick walls, nautical art, but the knock out feature was the ceiling. Artfully crafted and imaginative. Out side seating in a separate room, with a tables and a counter that allows a nice view of Park St.
Another order at the counter spot, large menu boards display all the options. This service style is trending, I see it more and more. Place your order, get your number and take a seat, food will be delivered.
Let’s get to the food, starting with the fried Oyster Basket, including fries and two hush puppies, advertised at “market price”. There is a choice of fried, grilled or blackened, we took the oysters fried, also a Shrimp taco, blackened with black bean mango salsa, tomatoes, romaine, cabbage, jalapeno aioli, and cilantro on a corn tortilla. Grabbed our drinks and scored a seat outside at the much coveted counter.
Here are our thoughts on the food; Oyster Basket, oysters large and plump inside, nice crunchy outside these were truly the best item. French fries and hush puppies well overcooked, my friend stated the hush puppies suffered from the double D’s dense and dry. Flavor was good but texture and dryness was a big turn off.
The shrimp taco, also got low marks, shrimp were plentiful and nicely blackened, but the black bean mango salsa was totally lacking in flavor. even the jalapeno aioli unable to rescue this taco. We added some of the shrimp sauce we had for the oysters to the taco. Sad.
Our overall impression, hit or miss, nice surroundings, but food just meh. There are many better options for seafood. Would I eat here again? If I was on this side of town perhaps, but can not see making this a destination. There are many better options in the Riverside/Avondale area. That being said, try it out, bring the besties, take a look up at the ceiling and get to that outside seat, that in itself is worth the visit.
