Metro Diner

9802 Baymeadows Rd.
Jacksonville, Fl 32225

I stopped going to Metro Diner years ago, when the original Hendricks Ave, location became “the place to be.” People would wait for hours just to say they survived the process.  Now there are many Metro places to choose from, so the odds of getting into one of the locations have improved significantly. Thus I agreed to meet a friend for mid-week brunch.  We chose the Baymeadows location and hoped for the best.  As expected the place full at 10:30 with a wait list, go figure.  Turnover was quick and we only waited about ten minutes.

The menu has just about every combination of breakfast fare one could hope for, eggs cooked in any way possible, pancakes, waffles, usual breakfast meat sides as well as lunch items, such as burgers, sandwiches, and salads.  You get the picture; it’s over the top with choices, plus a special board.  All of this is perfect for the patron.  I personally dislike traditional breakfast fare, so anything else is what I am looking for, evidently so was my friend although she went with an egg dish it, looked delicious.

I opted for the Lox and Bagel plate, hoping for the best, but not expecting what arrived.  I can’t say I have eaten Lox and Bagels in every restaurant in Jacksonville, what I can tell you is my experience has been less than stellar, well until this time. The food was well plated,  a warm, fresh bagel covered with more than a “schmear” of soft cream cheese. Oversized thinly sliced salmon covered the entire bagel, along with all the right sides one wants to complete the dish, capers, chopped eggs, onions, and tomatoes to say I was delighted would be understating my joy.

Not to entirely dismiss the breakfast ritual of the south I added a side of cheese grits.  I was thinking a smooth and creamy flavorful dish with cheese melted throughout, this was not the case, looking more like a cup of grits that had cheese layered on top then a quick spin in the microwave, to melt the toppings.  I could have lived with that, but the grits were flavorless, a pinch of salt at cooking would have made a big difference.  I had to put them aside.

My companions egg dish was stunning, it looked like a giant star, and if I were fond of eggs, that’s a recipe I would want.  Huevos Rancheros, with your choice of eggs served over fried tortilla shells, chorizo sausage, black beans, onions, and peppers, topped with melted cheese, salsa, sour cream, jalapeños and green onions. It was marvelous and more than enough.

To my delight, the food was well beyond my expectations, and I will make more of an effort when looking for an inexpensive, casual spot for a breakfast/lunch meal.  Ideal for a lazy weekend breakfast, gather the kids, the grands, or just bring the paper and go solo.  For sure there will be something or many items on the menu you will want to try.  I don’t think you will be disappointed.
