One thing I have learned in my two years of blogging; I do not live in a food zone. Yep, to find great food it is not unusual for me to drive fifteen to thirty miles. Today I made the seventeen mile trip to Pine Grove Deli and Meat Market, and it was well worth it. I am a little late coming to Pine Grove; it’s a long time fixture (60 +years) in Avondale, I can’t say how I missed it. Perhaps because my deli experiences in Jacksonville have been less than stellar, I have just given up. Today was the exception. A no frills exterior and interior, indoor and outdoor seating; the menu offers breakfast, and lunch sections.
I had checked out the menu the night before, so my path was clear it had to be the Ruben, my favorite deli sandwich. I was not disappointed. Marbled Rye, a more than healthy portion of well flavored Corned Beef, my replacement Cole Slaw, and zesty Swiss cheese well dressed with a flavorful Russian Dressing made this the perfect sandwich for me. I excused every bad Ruben I have eaten in town. I added a side of fries just in case (of famine or zombie attack) it was a right choice, golden brown, salted to perfection for my taste.
My friends had an equally enjoyable experience; one selected the Patty Melt, a well-grilled sandwich, the meat cooked to a perfect medium rare, with just enough cheese that oozed out the sides. All the burger meat is fresh and ground in house which makes a tremendous difference when it comes to flavor,
Our last choice the Boss Hogg, grilled thick cut honey cured ham steak, arugula with a homemade garlic aioli, crumbled pork cracklings, melted cheddar on grilled Texas toast. He added a fried egg for good measure. For sure a “manly” hand full that was declared delicious. He did not share.
Pine Grove has won numerous food awards, and once you try the food, it will be quite clear why this is. Please, please get the family or the friends in the wagon, make your way over to Avondale, or however far you have to drive and check it out. I will promise you there are no disappointments.
