Waffa N’ Mikes Cafe, is a hidden treasure, hole in the wall restaurant in the Springfield area of Jacksonville that should not be overlooked. This family owned and operated restaurant offers up some of the tastiest Middle Eastern fares this writer has sampled in Jacksonville.
An exciting variety if offering; appetizers, platters, salads, gyros and one fantastic dessert selection, Baklava; there are also several vegetarian options available.
We chose several items to get an authentic feel for the food and service. Our first choice the Hummus with Pita, a velvety concoction of pureed chickpeas, tahini, and garlic; the olive oil of such quality it was drinkable. Muhammara, a roasted red pepper dish served with walnuts, olive oil and just a dash of balsamic vinegar. A new meal for me the spice level was perfect for my taste buds.
Our main dish the Beef Shawarma of Middle Eastern origins, well, seasoned beef with tomatoes and onion. The order comes with two side choices, but we chose one, the Feta Cheese. A more than ample serving we delighted in every bite.
No Middle Eastern meal is complete for me unless I order the Baklava, today was no exception.
Sweet layers of filo dough filled with pistachios then another layer of the honey tasting filo. This dessert is so rich I almost feel guilty eating it but quickly move past that with the next bite.
So make the trip, gather the besties they will love you for introducing them to this restaurant. The staff is friendly and welcoming, food is as good as you will find in town.
