Mothers Café and Bar is the newest restaurant offering from our friend and well known Jacksonville Chef Roderick Smith aka “Sweet Pete.” The owner of Jax Diner recently opened Mother’s Café and Bar on the Northside of Jacksonville; the new restaurant has a full bar, big screen, outside patio seating and actives during the week such as; trivia, and live entertainment on selected evenings. We made the trip out our third visit, for some of my favorite foods.
Now that the bar is available I started with a Bloody Mary, the bartender Lee asked how I would like it spicy or mild with or without all the entire garnish that so many bars want to add, then proceeded to make me one of the best Mary’s I have tasted in a while. When it arrived, it was spicy to order, and a pick full of giant olives just how I like my Mary’s.
An order of the local Spicy Sausage Sliders appealed, and that was next up. They proved to be quite the treat, a significant portion of spicy meat, slathered in mustard; house-made pickles, nested between a sweet Hawaiian Roll. The sliders were a tasty and filling treat for the moderate price of $8.99.

One thing my friend and I always agree on this the Mac and Cheese, dubbed “Crack and Cheese” due to the addictive quality of this simple food by those who have sampled it. Served in an iron skillet, bubbly and hot made for a perfect shared treat at a modest $3.99.

Another selection we agree on the Local Shrimp and Grits, perhaps some of the best around. This offering is heavy with plump shrimp, smooth grits, and a flavorful sauce; comfort food at its finest, oh and don’t forget a square of butter filled cornbread. I can never get my fill of this dish. The order included your choice of sides and priced at a reasonable $15.99

I will go out on a limb here and say, you will not find better food in this area. Chef Pete is a master of his craft, the staff although new is courteous, eager to please and go the extra mile, to satisfy. Take the time to go in and experience the food, grab your besties and make it a night of food and trivia or perhaps catch some live music.
